What a head massage session at Woravalan covers
Head massage at Woravalan is not a single technique — it draws from three traditions that overlap in the area from the scalp to the upper back.
Tell your therapist at the start which you prefer — or leave it to her to read what your scalp and neck need and adapt accordingly.
Indian head massage (Champissage)
The Ayurvedic tradition of scalp and head massage — brought to the West by Narendra Mehta in the 1970s. Works on the marma energy points of the scalp, face, neck and shoulders. Traditionally performed seated, without oil — though oil can be added. Improves circulation to the scalp, releases tension in the muscles of the head and upper trapezius.
Thai head massage
The Thai variation works the same area using the thumbs and fingers along the energy lines of the scalp and the pressure points around the cranium, temples, jaw and occiput. It includes the neck and upper shoulders as part of the same sequence. Typically done without oil.
Scalp and neck with oil
When oil is added — cold-pressed sesame or coconut, traditionally — the session shifts from pressure-point work toward a more nourishing, circulation-focused treatment. Good for people with dry scalp, stress-related hair loss or those who simply want the additional benefit of oil absorption into the scalp tissue.
Head massage for headaches — why it works
Most tension headaches originate not in the head but in the neck and upper shoulder muscles — specifically the upper trapezius, the suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull, and the sternocleidomastoid along the side of the neck. These muscles refer pain upward into the scalp, the temples and behind the eyes.
Head massage addresses this by working the referred pain pathway in both directions: releasing the muscle tension at the neck and subocciput that is generating the headache, and simultaneously applying rhythmic pressure to the scalp that activates the parasympathetic nervous system and reduces the overall pain signal.
Most clients with tension headaches report significant relief during the session. The relief tends to last longer when the session includes the neck and upper shoulders, because the source of the referral is addressed directly rather than just the symptom area.
This is not a treatment for migraine — the mechanism is different. For tension headaches caused by stress, screen time or neck posture, it is consistently effective.
If you come with a headache, tell your therapist at the start. They will adapt the session accordingly.
What happens during the session
You sit in a chair or lie on the table — your therapist will ask which you prefer. If you choose seated, you stay fully dressed. If you lie down, the session becomes more of a full upper-body treatment and you will be covered with a sheet.
The sequence moves from the shoulders upward: upper trapezius and the base of the neck first — the area where most tension is stored. Then the sides and back of the neck, working along the cervical muscles and into the suboccipital ridge. Then the scalp, using rhythmic fingertip pressure across the cranium and sustained pressure at the marma and Thai pressure points. The temples, jaw and forehead last.
If you chose oil, she applies it warm to the scalp midway through the session. The oil is light — it does not leave a heavy residue — and she will tell you at the start so you can decide whether you want to wash your hair afterward.
A 45-minute session covers the full area at a good depth. 60 minutes allows more time on the neck and shoulders if they need it.
