The lymphatic system — why lymphatic drainage massage Phuket works
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes and organs that runs parallel to the circulatory system. Where the blood system has the heart to pump fluid, the lymphatic system has no central pump — it relies on muscle contraction, breathing and body movement to move lymph fluid through its vessels and through the lymph nodes, where it is filtered.
Lymph fluid carries immune cells, proteins, fats absorbed from the digestive tract, and cellular waste products. When it moves efficiently, the body maintains fluid balance, clears cellular debris and supports immune function. When it slows — due to inactivity, prolonged sitting, surgery, illness or certain medications — fluid accumulates in tissues. The result is swelling, heaviness and a general sense of sluggishness: the most recognisable signs of a blocked or congested lymphatic system.
Long-haul flights are the most common cause of acute lymphatic congestion in otherwise healthy people: cabin pressure, low humidity, immobility and the dependent position of the legs combine to slow lymphatic return from the lower extremities. The result is swollen ankles and a sense of systemic heaviness that can last 24 to 48 hours after landing.
Manual lymphatic drainage massage addresses this directly by applying gentle, rhythmic pressure along the lymphatic pathways — encouraging fluid to move from congested areas into the nodes where it can be processed and returned to circulation. At Woravalan in Bang Tao, every session uses the manual Vodder-derived technique: no machines, no compression devices — hands only.

What lymphatic drainage massage does — and who benefits most
Manual lymphatic drainage massage (MLD) has a significant body of clinical evidence behind it. It is used in hospitals and physiotherapy clinics for the management of lymphedema — chronic lymphatic swelling — as well as in post-surgical recovery protocols. Its use for general wellness is a more recent development, driven partly by the growing awareness of the lymphatic system's role in immune and metabolic function.
Post-flight recovery
The combination of immobility, reduced cabin pressure and low humidity significantly impairs lymphatic return from the lower limbs during long flights. A 90-minute lymphatic drainage massage session within 24 hours of landing accelerates the clearance of accumulated fluid and the systemic fatigue compounds that come with it. Most clients notice the difference in their legs the following morning.
Post-surgery recovery
MLD is a standard component of post-surgical care for procedures that affect the lymphatic system — breast surgery, liposuction, abdominoplasty and others. The gentle pumping action reduces post-operative swelling, accelerates the resorption of surgical fluid and supports the healing of affected tissue. Timing and technique are important — wait for medical clearance and book with a therapist trained in post-surgical MLD protocol. Woravalan Khollum holds this certification.
Fluid retention and general lymphatic congestion
Chronic low-grade lymphatic congestion — puffy face in the morning, ankles that swell in the heat, a general sense of heaviness — responds well to regular MLD. Most people notice a reduction in puffiness within 24 hours of the first session. Regular sessions every two to four weeks help maintain the improvement.
Immune support
The lymphatic system is the primary vehicle for immune cell movement through the body. When lymph flow is efficient, immune cells reach their targets faster and the inflammatory response is better regulated. Lymphatic drainage massage is increasingly used as a supportive therapy for people managing chronic inflammation or recovering from illness.
What happens during a lymphatic drainage session at Woravalan
You arrive and your therapist asks a few questions — any recent surgery, current medications, known lymphedema diagnosis, areas of particular swelling or discomfort. This takes about three minutes.
You lie on the table fully clothed or in minimal clothing — lymphatic drainage does not require oil, though a light touch of oil is sometimes used for continuity of stroke. The pressure is very light — much lighter than most people expect. MLD uses a specific sequence of gentle, rhythmic strokes that follow the anatomical pathways of the lymphatic vessels and the location of the lymph nodes.
The session typically begins at the neck — the terminus where lymph re-enters the bloodstream — and works outward and downward from there, clearing space in the nodes before moving fluid toward them. This is the reverse of the intuitive direction: rather than pushing from the extremities inward, MLD clears the drainage point first, then encourages fluid to move toward it.
For post-flight or general fluid retention, the session focuses on the lower body — legs, abdomen and the inguinal nodes in the groin. For post-surgical work, the focus depends on the area and the procedure, and a specific protocol applies.
A 90-minute session is the standard. The effects are often visible within a few hours — reduced puffiness, lighter legs and clearer skin tone. The full effect is usually felt the following morning. Sessions are available in-studio in Bang Tao or as a mobile lymphatic drainage massage at your villa or hotel.
Manual technique — what we use and what we do not
USED:
NOT USED:
- Hands only — no devices, no machines
- Light rhythmic pressure following lymphatic pathways
- Specific MLD node-clearing sequence
- Light oil occasionally for stroke continuity
- Compression devices or pneumatic boots
- Deep pressure or percussion
- Electric or vibration equipment
- Cupping
What is sometimes called "Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage" is a variation that incorporates a firmer technique and a focus on body contouring. At Woravalan we practise traditional manual MLD — the certified clinical technique developed by Dr. Emil Vodder — rather than the contouring variation. The pressure, rhythm and sequencing are different; so are the clinical outcomes. If you have specific post-surgical requirements, please describe them when you book.

The suite — private, quiet and set up for this treatment
Lymphatic drainage requires a relaxed client and a calm environment — muscle tension activates the sympathetic nervous system and partially counteracts the parasympathetic state that allows lymph flow to increase. A private room with a closed door is not a luxury for this treatment; it is a clinical requirement. At Woravalan both suites are dedicated to this standard.
We have two private suites. One booking per room, door closed, nobody walking through. Temperature controlled. Cleaned and reset between sessions.
Located in Bang Tao, 500 metres from Boat Avenue. Quiet side street. Parking at the door.

In Thailand, DHSS registration is the regulated equivalent of an LMT (Licensed Massage Therapist). Woravalan holds this registration, along with specific MLD certification.
Lymphatic drainage at Woravalan is performed by Woravalan Khollum.
She holds certification in manual lymphatic drainage technique — Vodder method — alongside her Thai Traditional Massage Society qualification and years of practice, including time at Amanpuri resort on Pansea Beach, where therapeutic treatments were a core part of the programme.
She speaks Thai, English and understand Russian.
MLD requires specific training in the anatomy of the lymphatic system and the correct sequencing of node-clearing and drainage strokes. It is not a technique that generalises from other massage training. If you are booking for post-surgical recovery, mention the procedure when you book so she can confirm the appropriate protocol.
