HOT STONE MASSAGE · BANG TAO, PHUKET
Hot stone massage Phuket — basalt stones, therapeutic heat, private suite in Bang Tao.
Smooth volcanic basalt stones, heated to 50–55°C and placed along the spine and in the palms. Used simultaneously as a massage tool — the weight and warmth of the stone replaces the therapist's hand in certain passes, and complements it in others. The heat penetrates 3–4 centimetres into the muscle — deeper than any surface technique. This is what separates a hot stone massage from a standard treatment: the heat works with the hands, not after them.
Available in-studio only. Not available as a villa outcall treatment — the heating equipment stays in the suite.

Hot stone massagePhuket — the tradition and the technique

The use of warm stones in therapeutic massage is documented across multiple cultures — in Native American sweat lodge traditions, in Ayurvedic practice where warmed stones are placed along the spine, and in traditional Chinese medicine. The modern form of hot stone massage as a structured bodywork modality was developed in the United States in the 1990s and spread rapidly through the international spa and wellness industry.
The stones used are basalt — a dense volcanic rock that retains heat exceptionally well due to its high iron content. When heated in water to 50–55°C, a basalt stone will hold that temperature for 20 to 30 minutes of contact massage. The thermal properties of basalt are not incidental: the stone is chosen specifically because it transmits heat slowly and steadily into the tissue rather than producing a sharp surface burn.
In Thai therapeutic practice, the use of heat is well-established — the traditional Thai herbal compress (luk pra kob) delivers heat through steamed herbs, and warm oil has been used in Thai massage for centuries. Hot stone massage fits naturally into this framework: it is heat, applied with weight and movement, along the body's energy pathways.
At Woravalan, hot stone massage uses a full set of basalt stones — large flat stones for placement along the spine and on the chest, medium stones for the hands and between the toes, and smaller stones used as massage tools on the back, shoulders and legs. All stones are heated to 50–55°C and maintained at temperature throughout the session.
What hot stone massage Phuket does — heat, weight and the muscle
Hot stone massage produces effects that neither massage
nor heat alone achieves. The combination of weight,
warmth and movement creates a compound therapeutic response
in the muscle and nervous system.
Thermal penetration into muscle tissue
The surface of a heated basalt stone reaches 50–55°C.
As it is applied to the skin and moved slowly across the
muscle, the heat transfers into the tissue at a rate
determined by the density of the stone and the duration
of contact. At sustained contact, the heat reaches 3–4
centimetres — the depth of the superficial muscle layer.
At this depth, the muscle fibres become more extensible,
blood vessels dilate and the local circulation increases
significantly. This thermal effect softens muscle tissue
in a way that cold-technique massage alone cannot achieve
in the same time frame.
Weight and pressure without effort
One of the distinctive qualities of hot stone massage is
the weight of the stone itself. A large basalt stone
weighs 200–400 grams. When placed on the muscle and
moved with the therapist's hand, it applies consistent,
broad pressure without the fluctuations that occur with
finger and thumb pressure. For clients who hold tension
in response to direct hand pressure, the impersonal
weight of the stone often produces a deeper release.
Parasympathetic activation
The combination of warmth and weight activates the
parasympathetic nervous system more rapidly than either
cold-technique massage or heat alone. The thermal stimulus
reaches the thermoreceptors in the skin, which signal
the nervous system to reduce sympathetic tone — the
physiological state of alertness and muscle readiness
that most people carry chronically. The muscle releases
more completely when the nervous system is told, through
heat, that it is safe to do so.
Circulation and lymphatic response
The vasodilation produced by the heat increases blood flow to the surface and superficial muscle layer. The lymphatic system responds to the rhythmic movement of the stone across the skin — driven by both pressure and heat simultaneously, the circulatory response is more immediate than cold-technique massage alone can produce. The result is a visible improvement in skin tone and a reduction in any superficial puffiness in the worked areas, particularly in the back and shoulder
What happens during a hot stone massage session in Phuket at Woravalan
You arrive and the warmstones are already heating. Your therapist
uses a professional stone heater — a water bath maintained
at a consistent temperature — so the stones are ready at
the start of the session and stay at the right temperature
throughout.
You undress to your comfort level and lie face-down under
a warm sheet. Your therapist places the large flat stones
along your spine — you feel the weight settle and the
warmth begin to move into the tissue almost immediately.
Smaller stones are placed in the palms of your hands.
While the placement stones work on your back, your
therapist begins on your legs using a medium stone as
a massage tool — long effleurage strokes from the ankle
upward, the weight and warmth of the stone doing work
that would take significantly longer with hands alone.
The IT band, the hamstrings, the calf. Then she moves
to the back, removing the placement stones one by one
and using them to continue the massage.
The combination of stationary heat from the placement
stones and moving heat from the massage stones means
that the back muscles receive sustained thermal treatment
throughout the session — not just when the stone makes
direct contact.
You turn onto your back for the second half. Stones on
the chest and collarbones. The therapist works the
anterior thighs, the hip flexors, the abdomen with
slow, warm pressure.
A 60-minute hot stone massage session covers the full body at a good depth. 90 minutes allows more time on the back and shoulders and a complete front-and-back sequence with the placement stones in both positions.
After the session the skin is warm and the muscle feels
heavier than usual — a productive heaviness. Most clients
do not want to dress immediately. That is normal.
The stones — what we use and why basalt
LEFT — THE STONES:
Smooth volcanic basalt from a certified spa supply source.
Cleaned and sanitised between every session.
Three sizes:
— Large flat stones (placement) — spine, chest, palms
— Medium stones (massage tool) — back, legs, shoulders
— Small stones — between toes, around joints
The surface of each stone is smooth from natural water
erosion — not polished artificially. The texture matters:
a stone with a rough surface creates friction that
interrupts the stroke. A naturally smooth basalt stone
glides with the oil and the skin without resistance.
RIGHT — THE TEMPERATURE:
Maintained at 50–55°C in the water bath.
Tested before every session with a thermometer.
Applied to the skin at 48–52°C after a brief cooling
moment outside the water.
The temperature feels intensely warm rather than hot.
If at any point during the session the stone feels too
hot, tell your therapist and she will let it cool for
10–15 seconds before reapplying. This is a normal
part of the session — the stones cool as they are used
and are cycled back to the heater.
The suite — private, warm and set up for this treatment
Hot stone massage is performed in one of our two private suites. The suite is warmer than for other treatments — the ambient temperature is raised slightly before you arrive, because the thermal effect of the stones works better when the client is already warm and the muscle is not in cold-defence mode.
The stone heater sits beside the table. Your therapist moves between it and the table throughout the session — you will hear the brief sound of stones being lifted from the water. The room fills gradually with the faint mineral scent of the heated basalt.
One booking per suite. Door closed. Nobody walks through. The treatment requires stillness and warmth — a shared hall would make neither possible.
Located in Bang Tao, 500 metres from Boat Avenue. Quiet side street. Parking at the door.
Note: Hot stone massage is available in-studio only. The heating equipment stays in the suite. For outcall sessions at your villa or hotel, please see our other treatments — several are available as
