Ancient Thai Massage — 2,500 Years of Practice, Now in Bang Tao
Traditional Thai massage — known in Thai as Nuad Thai or Nuad Boran, meaning "ancient massage" — carries a documented history stretching back to the courts of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Its founding is attributed to Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, personal physician to the Buddha, whose methods were first recorded on palm leaves and later carved into the stone walls of Wat Pho temple in Bangkok. Those carvings still stand today.
In 1962, Wat Pho established the formal school of traditional Thai massage — the most widely recognised authority in the field. The curriculum is built around the body's energy pathways, called Sen lines: the therapist works along these lines using compression, deep stretching and joint mobilisation in a precise sequence. No oils, no table. The client remains fully clothed on a mat throughout the session.
In 2019, traditional Thai massage became the first massage tradition inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list — recognition of a method that has remained structurally unchanged for centuries. At Woravalan we practise the same certified technique, rooted in the Wat Pho tradition, in a private suite in Bang Tao, Phuket.

What traditional Thai massage Therapy Does for Your Body — and Why It Works
Traditional Thai massage therapy works on multiple systems simultaneously — muscular, circulatory, lymphatic and nervous. Because it combines compression, passive stretching and joint mobilisation rather than surface-level stroking, the effects run deeper and last longer than most massage styles. This is why a single full body Thai massage session often produces results clients describe as feeling a week's worth of physiotherapy.
Muscle tension and mobility
Sustained compression along the muscle belly releases chronic tightness without the bruising that deep pressure on a single point can cause. The assisted stretching — held for several breaths at each position — increases range of motion in ways that are difficult to achieve through active stretching alone. Most clients notice the difference in shoulder and hip mobility within 48 hours.
Circulation and lymphatic flow
The rhythmic compression along the Sen pathways mimics the effect of movement on the circulatory system. Blood flow increases to compressed areas during the release phase. The technique also supports the same circulatory principle, applied through compression and release rather than manual drainage strokes.
Nervous system and stress response
The slow, deliberate pace of traditional Thai massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the state in which the body repairs itself. Cortisol levels drop measurably during and after the session. This is why many clients feel simultaneously alert and deeply rested afterwards, rather than drowsy as they might after an oil massage.
Posture and joint health
The joint mobilisation component — rotating ankles, hips, shoulders, and the cervical spine through their full range — lubricates the joints and releases the connective tissue that restricts movement after long periods of sitting. Particularly effective for people who work at desks or travel frequently and for those experiencing lower back or sciatic discomfort.
What Happens During a Traditional Thai Massage Session
At our studio in Bang Tao, Phuket you arrive and your therapist asks a few short questions — where you are holding tension, anything she should avoid, how firm you prefer the pressure. There is no intake form to fill. The conversation takes two minutes.
You change into loose cotton clothing that we provide — trousers and a top, comfortable for movement. You keep everything on throughout the session. There is no oil.
You lie on a padded mat on the floor. The session begins at the feet — compression along the sole and the lower leg — and moves upward through the calves, thighs, abdomen, arms, shoulders, neck and scalp. The sequence is methodical and follows the Sen pathway map, though your therapist adjusts the depth and pace continuously based on what she finds.
At various points during the session, your therapist will guide you into assisted stretches — Clients with lower back tension or sciatic discomfort often notice the most immediate relief during this part of the session. You do not need to do anything. She moves you; you relax into the position.
A 60-minute session covers the full body at a functional depth. 90 minutes allows more time in the areas that need it — typically the back, hips and shoulders — and a longer stretch sequence at the end.
After the session you have the suite for a few minutes before we reset it. Most clients sit quietly for a moment before standing. The pressure during a traditional Thai massage session can feel intense — particularly along the thighs and lower back. This is normal. Your therapist adjusts on request at any point.

Private Suite Thai Massage — One Room, One Booking, One Client
At our Woravalan Thai massage studio in Bang Tao, we have two suites. Each one holds exactly one booking at a time. When you arrive, the room is yours alone — no curtain between you and another client, no shared hall, no second therapist walking through.
The mat is on the floor, where traditional Thai massage belongs. The ceiling is high enough for full stretch positions. The lighting is warm and adjustable. The room is climate-controlled. Between sessions it is cleaned, the mat is reset, and the air is cleared.
If there are two of you, both therapists work the suite together at the same hour. If you are alone, you have the whole room.
