What Is Abhyanga and How Does It Compare to Thai Massage?
Abhyanga is the traditional Ayurvedic oil massage that originates in India and has been practised as part of Ayurvedic medicine for several thousand years. As Ayurvedic treatments have become increasingly popular in international wellness circles, they have begun to appear on spa menus in Phuket alongside traditional Thai massage. Understanding the differences helps guests choose the treatment that matches their needs.
What Abhyanga Is
Abhyanga involves the application of warm medicated oil to the entire body using rhythmic, flowing strokes. The oil is the primary therapeutic agent — in classical Ayurvedic theory, specific herbal oils nourish the skin and deeper tissue layers while the warmth opens the channels through which the oil is absorbed. Sessions are typically performed by one or two therapists simultaneously, with the strokes following the direction of arterial flow — generally toward the heart on the limbs.
What Thai Massage Is
Traditional Thai massage does not use oil and is not primarily concerned with cutaneous absorption. It works through mechanical pressure, stretching, and joint mobilisation along the energy pathways of the body. The therapeutic effect is produced by the direct physical action of compression and movement rather than through a medium applied to the skin. It is performed fully clothed on a floor mat.
The Key Differences
Abhyanga is fundamentally a nourishing, unctuous treatment that leaves the skin saturated with oil and requires a shower or steam bath to close. It is deeply calming but does not address structural restrictions or specific musculoskeletal problems. Thai massage is more interventional — it creates change in the muscle tissue and connective tissue through direct mechanical means and is the better choice for physical complaints. For pure relaxation and skin nourishment, abhyanga is exceptional.
