What to Do After a Thai Massage to Get the Most From It

How you treat your body in the hours after a Thai massage session has a meaningful impact on how long the benefits last and how your body responds to the work that was done. A few straightforward habits in the post-session window make a significant difference.

Drink Water: This Is Not Optional

Massage accelerates the movement of metabolic waste products — lactate, creatine kinase, inflammatory markers — out of the muscle tissue and into the bloodstream for elimination. The lymphatic and renal systems that handle this elimination process require adequate hydration to function efficiently. If you leave a session and drink no water, the waste products cleared from the muscles remain in circulation longer. Drink at least two glasses of water in the two hours following your session.

Avoid Alcohol for the Rest of the Day

Alcohol and massage are a poor combination in both directions — before and after. Post-session, your cardiovascular system is already in a dilated, low-pressure state. Alcohol extends this state while simultaneously dehydrating you. The combination often produces post-session fatigue that guests who drink immediately after massage frequently attribute to the massage itself.

Rest If You Can

Deep tissue and therapeutic Thai massage produces a recovery demand in the tissue — the mechanical work of compression and stretching is a physical stimulus to the tissue, and the adaptation to that stimulus happens during the rest period that follows. A 20 to 30-minute rest after a 90 or 120-minute session allows this adaptation to begin. Intense exercise immediately after a deep session is counterproductive.

What to Notice

Some tenderness in the days following a deep session is normal — the tissue has been worked and is recovering. Significant bruising or pain that is sharper or more localised than general muscle soreness is worth reporting to the studio. At Woravalan, we always ask how guests felt after a previous session before beginning the next one.
