Bang Tao vs Surin Beach: Which Part of North Phuket Is Right for You?

Bang Tao and Surin are adjacent beaches on the west coast of Phuket, separated by a short headland at the northern end of Surin. They attract different visitor profiles and offer different experiences, and the distinction is more meaningful than it might appear from a map.

Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao is the longer of the two beaches — approximately eight kilometres — and is backed by the Laguna resort complex in its southern section and lower-density villas and local community in the central and northern sections. It is wide, calm from November to April, and absorbs its visitors without feeling crowded. The backdrop of trees and the absence of a dense commercial strip along the beach gives it a more undeveloped feel than most of Phuket's major beaches. Cherngtalay village, with its restaurants, markets, and services, sits just inland from the central section.

Surin Beach

Surin is shorter — about one kilometre — and has a more concentrated, upmarket character. The beach itself is narrow during peak season and the sea here is more exposed, producing better surf conditions but rougher swimming. The bars and restaurants on the beachfront at Surin are generally higher-end, and the area attracts a well-heeled European crowd, particularly French and Scandinavian visitors.

Which to Choose

Bang Tao is the better choice for families, long-stay visitors, and those who want space, calm water, and a full range of nearby services without the concentrated resort atmosphere. Surin is the better choice for guests who want a smaller, more social beach with a livelier bar scene and direct access to high-quality dining without walking far. Many visitors to the area divide their time between the two.
