Does Thai Massage Hurt? What to Expect from Pressure and Stretching

2 min read

This is one of the most commonly asked questions about Thai massage, and the honest answer is: it depends on the area, the depth of tension, and the quality of communication between you and your therapist. What Thai massage should not feel like is simply painful throughout. What it does feel like — particularly over areas of tight muscle or restricted joints — is an intensity that most experienced recipients describe as productive rather than aversive.

The Pressure: What Is Normal

The thumb and palm pressure applied along the sen lines is firm and sustained. Over the inner thigh and the area along the shin, which tend to hold significant lymphatic and circulatory tension, the pressure can feel quite intense particularly early in the session. Over the back and shoulder complex, the forearm pressure used in some Thai massage sequences is heavier and more diffuse — it should feel like significant weight rather than sharp localised pain. None of this should produce a sharp, shooting, or electrical sensation.

The Stretching: What Is Normal

The assisted stretches in Thai massage take the joints and muscles close to their current range of motion limit. The sensation is a deep pull, sometimes accompanied by a slight burning feeling in the muscle being stretched. This is normal fascial and muscle sensation as the tissue lengthens. What is not normal is a sharp pain at the joint itself, or any sensation that suggests the joint is being forced beyond its range.

Your Role in the Session

The most important thing you can do to ensure a good session is communicate. A skilled DHSS-registered therapist adjusts pressure based on your feedback — but they cannot adjust what they do not know. If an area is too sensitive, say so. If the overall pressure is too much, say so. There is no value in suffering through a session in silence.
