How Many Times Should You Get a Massage on a Two-Week Holiday?
Most visitors to Phuket on a two-week holiday ask this question at some point — and the honest answer is that it depends on several factors including your baseline tension level, what you are physically doing during the holiday, and what outcome you are looking for from each session.
The Simple Answer for Most Guests
For a typical two-week holiday with moderate physical activity and the normal accumulated tension of international travel, three to four sessions is a reasonable guideline: an initial session in the first two days to address the travel tension, a second session mid-holiday as maintenance and deepening of the first session's work, and one or two sessions in the final days that leave you physically restored for the return journey. This spacing gives the tissue time to respond and recover between sessions.
If You Are Exercising Heavily
Guests who are surfing, running, cycling, or doing Muay Thai every day benefit from more frequent sessions — up to five or six over two weeks. The tissue turnover from daily intense exercise is significant, and weekly massage is generally accepted as effective maintenance for an athletic training load. At this frequency, alternating between lighter, recovery-focused sessions and deeper therapeutic sessions is more productive than the same session type every time.
The 24-Hour Rule
As a general guideline, leave at least 24 hours between deep tissue or therapeutic sessions. This gives the tissue time to process the work done and allows you to assess how you feel before the next session. Relaxation-focused sessions can be done more frequently without this concern.
First-Time Visitors
If you have never had a Thai massage before, start with a 90-minute session and wait to see how you feel in the 24 to 48 hours afterwards before booking your next session. Some tenderness is normal; extreme soreness suggests the first session was too deep and the subsequent one should be lighter.
