How to Prepare for Your First Thai Massage: A Practical Guide

The quality of a Thai massage session is determined primarily by the skill of the therapist — but what you do before the session affects how receptive your body is to the work and how much benefit you take away. A few straightforward preparations make a meaningful difference.

Arrive Hydrated

Dehydrated tissue is less pliable and responds less well to deep pressure than well-hydrated tissue. If you are arriving from a flight, from the beach, or from a day of significant physical activity, drink at least half a litre of water in the hour before your session. This is particularly important in Phuket's heat, where dehydration from ambient temperature is a constant factor for visitors who are not yet acclimatised.

Do Not Eat Heavily Before

A large meal immediately before a massage is uncomfortable. The prone position — lying face down — compresses the abdomen and makes digestion uncomfortable. A light meal two hours before the session is fine. A substantial meal within an hour of the session will make certain positions difficult and will reduce your overall comfort during the session.

Communicate Your Needs at the Start

The most important thing to do at the beginning of a session at Woravalan is to take two minutes with your therapist before lying down. Tell them about any areas of sensitivity, any recent injuries, whether you prefer lighter or deeper pressure, and whether there are specific areas you want focused on. A therapist who does not know these things cannot account for them.

Arrive a Few Minutes Early

Arriving five to ten minutes before your session time allows you to change, use the facilities, and begin settling before the session starts. Arriving rushed or late compresses the time available for the pre-session consultation and means you are still physically wound up when the treatment begins.
