Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Benefits, Process and What to Expect

The lymphatic system is one of the most underappreciated systems in the body. Unlike the cardiovascular system, which has the heart as its pump, the lymphatic system relies on the movement of the body's muscles and the rhythmic action of breathing to move fluid through its network of vessels and nodes. When the body is sedentary, stressed, or recovering from illness, the lymphatic system can become sluggish — a condition that contributes to puffiness, fatigue, immune suppression, and a general sense of heaviness.

What Lymphatic Drainage Massage Is

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique developed in Europe in the 1930s by Emil and Estrid Vodder. It uses very light, rhythmic strokes in specific directions — always toward the lymph nodes — to stimulate the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin surface to contract and move fluid more effectively. The pressure used is significantly lighter than standard massage — the lymphatic capillaries are just below the skin surface and require only a gentle pumping action to activate.

Who Benefits

Lymphatic drainage massage is most beneficial for guests recovering from surgery or injury, those with chronic oedema in the limbs, guests with fatigue and immune system stress, and long-haul travellers whose legs are noticeably swollen from cabin pressure and prolonged sitting. It is also used as part of the post-liposuction and post-cosmetic surgery recovery protocol at many Thai hospitals.

At Woravalan

Lymphatic drainage techniques are incorporated into appropriate sessions at Woravalan as part of our broader therapeutic massage offering. The combination of light lymphatic drainage with standard Thai massage elements produces a comprehensive treatment that addresses both deep tissue tension and circulatory function. DHSS-registered therapists, fully private rooms.
