Can Massage Help with Anxiety? What Happens in the Body

2 min read

The research on massage and anxiety has become increasingly robust in the past two decades. Multiple clinical trials have found that regular massage produces a measurable and sustained reduction in anxiety symptoms — a finding that aligns with what massage therapists and their clients have observed anecdotally for as long as the practice has existed.

How Anxiety Shows Up in the Body

Anxiety is not only a psychological experience — it has clear physical manifestations. Elevated cortisol and adrenaline keep the muscles in a state of heightened readiness. The shoulders rise slightly and stay elevated. The jaw tightens. The breathing becomes shallower and faster. The gastrointestinal system becomes reactive. Over time, these physical expressions of anxiety become habitual patterns that reinforce the psychological experience of anxiety rather than simply reflecting it.

What Massage Disrupts

Thai massage produces a parasympathetic nervous system shift — the physiological state that is incompatible with the anxiety response. As the parasympathetic system activates, cortisol drops, the shoulders soften, the jaw unclenches, and the breathing deepens. For the duration of the session, the body is physically in a state that is the opposite of anxiety. With repeated sessions, the habituation to a lower resting tension level begins to persist beyond the session.

The Serotonin Mechanism

Massage consistently increases serotonin levels. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter whose deficiency is most strongly associated with anxiety and depression, and whose increase is the primary mechanism of most anxiolytic and antidepressant medications. The natural serotonin increase produced by massage is not equivalent in magnitude to a pharmaceutical intervention, but it is real, measurable, and cumulative across regular sessions.
