What Is Traditional Thai Massage? History, Technique and Roots
Traditional Thai massage is one of the oldest codified systems of therapeutic bodywork in the world. Its origins lie in the confluence of Indian Ayurvedic medicine, Buddhist healing traditions, and the indigenous healing knowledge of the peoples of mainland Southeast Asia.
The Foundation: Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha
The founding father of Thai massage is traditionally identified as Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha — also known in Thailand as Shivago Komarpaj — a physician in northern India who is recorded in the Pali Buddhist Canon as the personal physician of the Buddha and of the Sangha, the community of Buddhist monks. His teachings on healing are understood to have been transmitted to Thailand through the Theravada Buddhist tradition that arrived in the region from Sri Lanka and India across the first millennium.
The Temple Lineage
For centuries, traditional Thai massage was taught and practised within the Buddhist temple — the wat — as part of the broader healing mission of Buddhist monasticism. The wats served as hospitals, hospices, and centres of medical knowledge in Thai society, and the massage tradition was preserved and transmitted by monks who incorporated it into their service to the community. Wat Pho in Bangkok, built in the eighteenth century, became the central repository of the traditional Thai medical knowledge and still functions as one of the primary schools of Thai massage.
Codification and Modernisation
The modern standardisation of Thai massage — the development of training curricula, the DHSS registration system, and the international spread of the practice — is largely a twentieth century development. The global popularity of Thai massage as a wellness treatment has driven both the growth of formal training institutions and, in some cases, the dilution of the traditional sequence in favour of techniques that are more familiar to Western guests.
