What Does a Thai Massage Actually Feel Like? An Honest Description

Thai massage is unlike any other form of bodywork most Western visitors have experienced. The most honest preparation is to arrive without strong preconceptions from Swedish or deep tissue massage experience, and to understand what makes the experience distinctive before you get on the mat.

The First Few Minutes

The session begins with you changing into loose cotton clothing provided by the studio. You lie on a padded floor mat — face up for the first part at some studios, face down at others depending on the sequence the therapist follows. There is no sheet. Your shoes and socks come off. The therapist typically begins at the feet and works with systematic thumb pressure along the energy lines of the leg before the session moves upward.

The Pressure

The pressure in Thai massage is sustained rather than gliding. The therapist holds a point for several seconds before moving to the next. Over areas of tension — often the inner thigh, the posterior lower leg, and the upper shoulder — the sustained pressure can feel quite intense before it begins to release. The word that most experienced recipients use is productive rather than painful — there is a quality to the sensation that feels purposeful even when it is strong.

The Stretching

The stretching component is what distinguishes Thai massage most clearly from other forms of bodywork. The therapist moves your body passively through a sequence of assisted stretches — the hip opening positions, the spinal rotation, the shoulder and arm sequence — that take the joints through their range of motion in a supported, controlled way. The sensation is a deep pull followed by a feeling of expansion and space that most guests describe as the defining quality of a well-executed Thai massage.

After the Session

Most guests end a Thai massage session feeling simultaneously lighter in the body and more grounded — a combination that is characteristic of effective bodywork and is difficult to produce through any other means. Drink water. Rest if you can. The effects develop over the following 24 hours.
