What Happens to Your Body During a Thai Massage?
The first question most people who have never had a Thai massage ask is: what actually happens in the room? This is a practical question that deserves a detailed answer, because Thai massage is meaningfully different from what most people in the West experience as standard massage.
What You Wear
Unlike oil-based massage, traditional Thai massage is performed with you fully clothed. Woravalan provides loose cotton clothing — a traditional Thai massage shirt and trousers — that you change into at the start of the session. You remove your shoes and socks. Nothing else comes off unless you are having an oil or aromatherapy massage, which is a separate treatment. No sheet is used.
The Mat, Not the Table
Traditional Thai massage is performed on a padded floor mat rather than a massage table. The mat allows the therapist to use their full body weight, leverage, and a range of positions around the body that a table does not permit. Some guests who are accustomed to table massage find the floor unfamiliar at first; most adjust within the first few minutes. If you have a specific mobility limitation that makes getting down to or up from the floor difficult, mention this when you book.
The Sequence
A traditional Thai massage session follows a general progression: feet and lower legs first, then the posterior (back) body, then turning supine for the anterior leg and hip work, then the arms and shoulder, and finishing with the neck and head. The therapist uses thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, and — in some sequences — knees and feet to apply pressure along the sen energy lines. Passive stretching is woven throughout.
Communication During the Session
The most important thing you can do during the session is communicate. Tell your therapist if the pressure is too deep or too light, if an area is particularly sensitive, or if a position is uncomfortable. At Woravalan, all therapists speak sufficient English to adjust based on your feedback.
