What to Wear to a Thai Massage: Everything You Need to Know

1 min read

First-time Thai massage guests frequently arrive unsure about what clothing to bring, whether they should undress, and what the protocol is. The answer is simpler than most people expect: you do not need to bring anything special, and you will not be asked to undress for a traditional Thai massage.

What Happens with Your Clothing

Traditional Thai massage is performed through clothing. At the start of your session at Woravalan, you will be given a loose cotton shirt and trousers — traditional Thai massage clothing — to change into. These are clean, laundered between every session, and are the standard attire for Thai massage across Thailand. You remove your shoes and socks. Everything else stays on.

Why Thai Massage Uses Clothing

The clothing is functional rather than incidental. The friction between the therapist's hands and the light cotton fabric distributes pressure across a slightly wider area than direct skin contact, which many guests find more comfortable particularly in the early part of a session. The fabric also keeps the guest warm throughout the session, which supports the parasympathetic relaxation response.

For Oil or Aromatherapy Massage

If you are booking an oil massage, aromatherapy massage, or body scrub — rather than traditional Thai massage — the setup is different. These treatments are performed on a table with a sheet for modesty, and the relevant body areas are uncovered as the therapist works. Woravalan provides all necessary draping. You do not need to bring anything specific for these sessions either.
