Deep tissue massage works on a different principle from relaxation massage. The goal is not comfort during the session — it is a specific result after it. Your therapist applies sustained pressure directly to the muscle groups that are generating pain, restriction or referred tension, and holds that pressure until the tissue responds. The technique targets trigger points — the hyperirritable knots in muscle tissue that develop when a muscle is chronically overloaded. A trigger point in the upper trapezius refers pain to the temple and side of the head. A trigger point in the suboccipital muscles refers pain behind the eye. Working these points directly — sustained ischemic compression until the referral pattern subsides — produces relief that stretching and surface-level massage cannot reach. This is not a painful treatment in the sense of something going wrong. It is uncomfortable in the way that productive work is uncomfortable. Most clients describe it as the most useful discomfort they have felt. Tell your therapist at any point if the pressure is too much — it will be reduced immediately.
